The results are in! The 67th annual Golden Globes, the first Hollywood award ceremony of the year, kicked off tonight at 8pm EST on NBC with several fashion hits and misses, teary acceptance speeches and some witty punch lines served by British comedian host Ricky Gervais.
Though some winners were predictable, this year's Golden Globes event honored a lot of first timers unlike the previous ceremonies. Mo'Nique took home the first award of the evening as she was named Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Mary Lee Johnston in Precious, a film adaptation of the award-winning 1996 novel Push by Sapphire.
Toni Collette, on the other hand, got the first TV award of the night as she earned her first Globe following three previous nominations for Best Performance by an Actress in a TV series Comedy in The United States of Tara, where she plays a mother with multiple personalities. This was also a first for Julianna Margulies, who won Best Actress in a TV Drama after six previous nominations for playing the wife of a disgraced attorney in The Good Wife.
The most pleasant surprise for me, however, was when Michael C. Hall got the Best Actor in a TV Drama--- his first Golden Globe for playing the lead in Showtime's Dexter. While he was up against big contenders such as House star Hugh Laurie and Mad Men's Jon Hamm, Hall gave a very compelling performance as a serial killer turned family man on the fourth season of Dexter.
"It's a hell of a thing to go to work in a place where everyone gives a damn," said Hall, who recently revealed he has cancer.
John Lithgow, who played fellow serial killer and season 4 villain on Dexter, also took home the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. "I've had the most wonderful time creeping out the entire country for the last six months," he said.
